Indonesian friends missing Indonesian food in Kuala Lumpur? Sunway got you !
When it comes to Ayam Penyet, who doesn’t know Ayam Penyet Ria, especially for Indonesian! Despite having so many Ayam Penyet stalls in Malaysia, my favourite Ayam Penyet Restaurant is Ayam Penyet Ria. “Penyet” in Javanese dialect literally means flattened or smashed, referring to its cooking process and presentation where the marinated chicken is smashed or flattened with a wooden mallet after deep fried, to loosen meat from the bone (Ayam Penyet Ria 2004). For me, This restaurant serves the best Ayam Penyet in town. There is a wide variety of dishes to choose from, ranging from their best seller ayam penyet, prawns (udang), squid (sotong), pomfret (ikan bawal) and more. Ayam Penyet Ria also serves a long list of refreshing Indonesian drinks.
As an Indonesian, the Ayam Penyet really fulfills my craving towards my hometown’s Ayam Penyet. The price for a student like me is reasonably affordable. The set consisting of Ayam Penyet served with a bowl of rice, two slices of cucumber, some bean sprouts, fried Tempe and Tahu and a glass of The O’ Ice is RM 12.00. The chicken marinated with herbs and spices is tender and adequately crispy. The vast variety of chilli sauce such as sambal belacan and sambal cabe hijau packs a whole lot of kick. Since I really enjoy spicy food, the sambal belacan is astronomical to me. I like to eat the Ayam Penyet mixed with a little bit of kriuk (crunchy) with the rice.
My friend and I also ordered a plate of extra Tempe and Tahu, a plate of Terong Penyet and a plate of Sotong Penyet. For a plate of Tempe/ Tahu with sambal belacan was RM 5.00 which is quite reasonable with the portion.
Taste wise, for the Terong Penyet, it was not very crispy as it was soaked with oil and the price is RM 4.00. The Terong Penyet also came with side dishes, cucumber, bean sprouts, Tahu and Tempe completed with the sambal belacan.
My friend and I personally really fond of the Sotong Penyet that cost RM 8.50 for a plate. The Sotong Penyet was really tasty especially eat it with the kriuk (crunchy) . One plate would never enough :p .
For the restaurant ambience itself similar to Indonesian Restaurant, the restaurant is sufficiently clean and the services quality is exceptional with friendly waiters and waitresses.

Luscious and mouthwatering as always! I’ve been living in Singapore for close to 4 years now and i’ve always had to satisfy my craving of Ayam Penyet Ria’s specialty food whenever i have the chance to go back to my hometown, Indonesia. I’ve never actually tried Ayam Penyet Ria in Malaysia but i’m dying to try! I’m willing to go to Malaysia just to experience the difference in culture and traditions through their food! Looking forward to it in the future! Peace out! ✌️
